Similar to the recent storm tore through the northern region the previous evening, City blew Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for Manchester United

This outcome represented consecutive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the top team with their title hopes severely dented.

United’s capacity to balance league and European football with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the opposition, they seemed fatigued from start to finish, the memorable win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to make changes with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

City, in opposition, have no similar loading worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his squad from the opening minute. Initial Opportunities

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the season.

They added to their cushion with an additional two goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was permitted to maraud through the middle from the back, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The influential Casparij collected the pass on the right side before delivering a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third after a quick change in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The primary substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, striking the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to register a single shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any team who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to put them in a favorable standing after the opening fixtures.
