The Liverpool legend in the running for Glasgow Rangers reappointment after Russell Martin is dismissed.
The former Rangers boss is a leading candidate for a dramatic comeback to the Scottish giants following the announced departure of manager the ex-Swansea boss.
Martin's disastrous spell at Rangers comes to a close
The coach's troubled period in Glasgow concluded with the boss exiting the the away venue via a rear entrance and a pre-arranged transport after a 1-1 draw which left Rangers eleven points adrift from the top of Scotland’s top flight after just seven games.
Incensed supporters had surrounded the Rangers team bus in the away ground, making their feelings clear.
Club hierarchy reluctant to let go of the manager
The Rangers board had been unwilling to dismiss the former Swansea boss, who was only appointed in June, despite strong protests from the fanbase.
However, there was an acknowledgement that the coach's position had become unsustainable.
The team have won only one of their league fixtures to date, which has been alongside disappointing displays in European competition.
In total, the coach secured just five victories of 17 official games, with a uninspiring, confused footballing philosophy that won over few admirers.
“While all transition periods require some time, performances have failed to reach the club’s expectations,” said a club announcement on the weekend.
“Deputy manager Gill, and first-team staff member Williamson, will also be leaving. Martin and his backroom team have put in tremendous effort throughout their tenure. We express gratitude for their work and send best wishes for the next chapter.”
Gerrard claimed the league with the club
Gerrard claimed the league with Rangers in 2020-21, their lone triumph since that year.
His performance in the Scottish league before then, alongside difficulties at Villa, creates uncertainty about his leadership skills.
Yet he is held in high esteem by the very fanbase the team desperately need back on side.
The return of the Liverpool icon, who most recently coached in Saudi Arabia, would be widely welcomed.
Gerrard will also be mindful of what few options he has to be a manager in significant leagues.
Martin’s exit will increase pressure on the sporting director
The coaching change will heighten focus on Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.
He had been hugely supportive of the manager while announcing a investment of a significant sum in the summer window.
Martin had put pen to paper on a three-year contract.
His past roles
Martin, who had previously coached the Dons and the Welsh club, managed Southampton to a rise to the Premier League in that year after being hired the prior offseason.
He was sacked last December after the Saints won only one of their first 16 games.
He was appointed the interim boss's successor in the summer, after the caretaker boss had taken over from the fired the former manager in the earlier part of the year.
