United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip the following week.
He was appointed interim leader after leading a revolutionary movement that ousted the former president in December 2024, concluding over a decade of civil war.
Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the group from its registry of global extremist entities this past July.
More Penalties Removed
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and allied countries for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
The pair met on their first occasion this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".
His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
Monday's visit does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. This past fall, he made history as the initial Syrian president to present to the United Nations gathering in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
